Difference myths about
"Tree of Life" in various races
Tree of Life rugs the origin of the Tree
o Life design varies between races and countries. To the Jews,
the Tree of Life (or Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil) grew
in the Garden of Eden; the Muslims believe
that it grew in Paradise; and the Chinese
are taught that it came from the Sea of Jade. To all the basic
significance remains the same - eternal life.
The design is executed in various ways,
acording to the culture and tradition of the weaver. In some
rugs the Tree of :ife is depicted as a single tree with branches
and flowers. Sometimes it is seen as two trees with intertwining
brances, known as the double Tree of Life. Occasionally, the
tree symbolism appears only as a bunch of flowers in a vase
and when this motif is repeated across the field it is known
as the zil-i-soltan design. In other rugs, only the
leaves of the tree of Life appear, filling the entire field.
Some rugs from the Kirman area depict the Tree of Life as
surrounded at its base by hills or perhaps mountains, in addition
to animals. |
